Background

Melanie Green Witherspoon holds a Master of Public Administration from UNC Charlotte and a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Dartmouth College. Her professional journey spans more than two decades in higher education, the public sector and facilities management, giving her a deep understanding of operational organizations, budget and finance, business processes and organizational effectiveness. These experiences have fueled her passion for advancing operational efficiency through data‑informed leadership and decision‑making.

Witherspoon currently serves as Senior Director of Finance and Business Operations at UNC Charlotte, where she leads a unit focused on budget, finance, process improvement, business analytics, quality assurance, contract management and customer and workforce experience. She chose to pursue her Doctorate in Business Administration to link research with an established career in higher education — and to fulfill a promise made.

Research Interest

Her research interest centers on the relationship between financial decision‑making practices and operational effectiveness in higher education, with an emphasis on how fiscal management influences organizational performance and service delivery. Witherspoon aims to gain insights into how financial decision‑making practices contribute to operational effectiveness and how findings may help higher education leaders make more informed financial decisions that strengthen operational outcomes and support long‑term institutional success.
